1855: The Santhal revolt of Bengal- Information gathered by RABI ROY

The Santhal rebellion (also known as the Santhal rebellion or the Santhal Hool), was a rebellion in

present-day Jharkhand, Eastern India against both the East India Company (EIC) and zamindari system by the Santhal. It started on June 30, 1855 and on November 10, 1855, martial law was proclaimed by the East India Company which lasted until January 3, 1856, when martial law was suspended and the rebellion was eventually suppressed by the Presidency armies. The rebellion was led by the four Murmu Brothers - Sidhu, Kanhu, Chand and Bhairav. wiki

Just two years before the revolt of 1857, there was another revolt in North India against the British. On one side were tribes fighting with bows and arrows and on the other were the British and their agents, the Zamindars with the latest weapons. Sadly, this great Santhal Revolt, fought in the jungles of Jharkhand and West Bengal finds just a one-line mention in our school history books. Not only was this an uprising of great importance, the root cause behind it, the rights to tribal lands, but also became the basis of a more recent and deadly movement that continues to fester- the infamous Naxalite movement in India. History truly is a continuum and it is important to understand the past, to make sense of the present.

The lead actors, Mithun Chakraborty and Mamata Shankar, both made their cinematic debuts through the film. The film score was provided by Salil Chowdhury, while K. K. Mahajan handled the cinematography. At the 24th National Film Awards, Mrigayaa won two awards - Best Feature Film and Best Actor.
