Remembrance: DILIP KUMAR

Updated: Jul 10, 2021

India means everything to me. It is my homeland. India is my country. It is here that I have gotten love and affection as a film star from millions and millions of my fans over the last five decades. Dilip Kumar

Dilip Kumar in my memory

It was the year 1955. It was my childhood, and Dilip Kumar was a well-known Bollywood actor then. Our family then lived in Sadar town in the Uluberia subdivision of the Howrah district in West Bengal, India. I can clearly remember my elder sister took me to watch a movie in the evening at the local cinema house 'Chhayagiti'. The name of the movie was 'Insaniyat' (Humanity). The picture was in Hindi, so the content was not meant to be understood. I just understood that this was the story of a Kingdom. And I didn't know any of the actors then, not even the name of Dilip Kumar. The only attraction I had was the role of a tiny chimpanzee, probably named 'Jippu'. My elder sister also liked it a lot. After watching the movie when we came back, my sister named our younger brother after that chimpanzee. A few days later, Didi (elder sister) bought a black coat and took a photo of my brother wearing it. Today I am reminiscing in the chair where my brother was photographed that day. By the way, that cinema house of that day is still there today, I last saw it in 2017.

Although I was not familiar with Dilip Kumar's name, advertisements for his films Dag, Ann, etc. were seen in my childhood. I got to know the actor after watching 'Mughal-e-Azam' at a slightly

older age. His performance in the role of Selim impressed me.

Not too many movies he acted in having seen me. I last saw him in 'Sagina Mahato'. Then my mature age and mind. Politics, trade unions - I understood many of these. There was also a fascination with acting in this film.

Dilip Kumar has acted in a total of 63 Indian movies, as a result, he received the highest award of Indian film and the second-highest state honor. Although I am not familiar with most of his films, I have no doubt that he was a great actor.

At his death, it seems he lived so long.

The shortage of large-size people like Dilip Kumar is not easy to fill.

I saw ‘Insaniyat’ starring Dilip Kumar at a young age, in 1955.

Yesterday, while preparing this compilation, I tried to watch it again and remembered the past.

I remembered that day.

Today I understand the Hindi language, the actor is no longer a stranger to me. But I did not understand anything.

Because today I am deaf. I am a victim of noise pollution.
